CSA Catapult appoints head of quantum On 17 June 2026, the UK’s Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult appointed William Waller as head of quantum, aiming to accelerate the transition of quantum technologies from research to scalable, real-world deployment. The appointment underscores the growing need for engineering, integration, and supply chain capabilities as quantum technologies move toward commercialisation. Waller brings extensive systems engineering and complex technology development experience from Leonardo, particularly in defence and dual-use applications. His role will focus on advancing key areas including quantum systems, AI hardware, advanced packaging, photonics, RF control, cryogenic integration, and test—capabilities essential for quantum communications, sensing, and future quantum computing infrastructure. CSA Catapult’s chief technology officer Nick Singh said Waller’s appointment strengthens the organisation’s role in bridging the gap between concept and deployable technology, emphasising the need for systems-level thinking and engineering discipline alongside scientific research. The UK possesses strong quantum research capability, but greater focus is required to enable integration, reliability, and scale-up. The appointment reflects a broader challenge across the quantum sector: moving from concept to engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain delivery. CSA Catapult says it plays a key role in connecting UK capabilities, accelerating commercialisation, and building resilient supply chains for emerging technologies.
