**Rambus PCIe 7 Switch IP with TDM Targets AI Infrastructure Connectivity, Business Grows 29%** Rambus has introduced PCIe 7 Switch IP with integrated Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) for next-generation AI networking SoCs, while its PCIe interface IP business grew 29% year-over-year, according to the SemiWiki Interface IP Survey report. As AI and high-performance computing (HPC) systems scale to hundreds of thousands of interconnected GPUs, efficient data movement between compute, memory, storage, and networking resources has become a strategic differentiator—transforming connectivity from an enabling technology into a critical determinant of system performance. PCIe 7.0 doubles the data rate to 128 GT/s per lane, providing the raw bandwidth needed for data-intensive AI workloads. However, Rambus emphasizes that higher bandwidth alone is insufficient; efficient sharing, predictable latency, and avoidance of bottlenecks are equally important. The new PCIe 7 Switch IP addresses these challenges by embedding TDM—an architectural enhancement not part of the PCIe 7.0 specification—that dynamically allocates transmission opportunities based on application demand, improving link utilization and traffic predictability. The switch architecture also supports flexible PCIe lane partitioning: a x16 interface can be configured as one x16, two x8, or four x4 connections during system initialization, enabling the same hardware platform to adapt to different combinations of GPUs, SSDs, accelerators, and networking devices. Designed for modern AI networking chips, the IP is physically aware, facilitating efficient implementation across the large silicon dies common in advanced SmartNIC and SuperNIC SoCs. Tim Messegee, Senior Director of Solutions Marketing at Rambus, notes that PCIe switches, NICs, SmartNICs, and TDM are established technologies, but their role in enabling AI and HPC scale is new. The industry is extending proven standards with architectural innovations rather than replacing them.
