Longsys has launched its Gen5 2TB mSSD (Micro SSD), a single-chip System-in-Package (SiP) drive capable of exceeding 12GB/s transfer speeds and scaling to 8TB, targeting AI PCs and storage-constrained devices. The drive, received directly from Longsys Chairman Huabo Cai, represents a major leap from the company’s Gen4 mSSD, which delivered 7.1GB/s from a quarter-sized package. The Gen5 mSSD integrates the entire storage solution into one SiP, eliminating nearly 1,000 solder joints compared to conventional SSDs, cutting manufacturing defect rates from ~1,000 DPPM to just 100, and reducing production costs by roughly 10 percent. At its heart is the Maxio MAP1802, a DRAMless PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe controller built on a 6nm process, supporting NAND interface speeds of 4,800MT/s. The sample arrived in a gold aluminum heatsink with a copper vapor chamber for efficient thermal management. Available in the compact 2230 form factor (22mm × 30mm), the mSSD is suitable for handheld gaming systems and ultrathin laptops. While Longsys has not confirmed the NAND flash, industry speculation points to YMTC’s X4-9070 3D NAND based on Xtacking 4.0 technology, as achieving 8TB and 12GB/s-class performance would require the latest high-density flash. The Gen5 mSSD is now reaching monthly production capacity of over 1 million units, directly supplying AI PCs and optimized for KV Cache workloads. The evolution from 2019’s Toshiba BG4 (1TB SiP at 2GB/s) to today’s 13GB/s-capable Gen5 mSSD highlights rapid SiP SSD advancement.
