AMD has launched the EPYC 8005 "Sorano" series, a new lineup of server processors using the same SP6 socket as the previous EPYC 8004 "Siena" series but offering a significant performance overhaul. The EPYC 8005 is designed as a drop-in replacement for EPYC 8004 with a BIOS update, featuring up to 84 cores and 168 threads, 384MB of L3 cache, support for DDR5-6400 memory, and CXL 2.0. The default TDP increases by 25W to 225W, but system-level power consumption at full utilization rises by under 10%. The SKU range spans from 8 to 84 cores, with pricing from $529 to $5,799. Notably, the 84-core SKU is only marginally more expensive than the 64-core version, emphasizing a focus on cost per core. A key change is the use of Zen 5 cores instead of Zen 4c cores found in the EPYC 8004 series, providing larger L3 caches and standard Zen 4-to-Zen 5 improvements.
